You've Probably Heard of Bigfoot Beer.  Well, Now There's A "Mr. Powell" Beer! At the Sasquatch Brew-Pub in Portland, No Less!

Thom Powell finally put down the chalk...for good. After 31 years in the same building and the same classroom, Thom Powell is moving on, as in, retiring from teaching.   And at Sasquatch Brewing, across the Stevens Creek ravine from his old haunt at Robert Gray Middle School, a parent of two former students who also owns the brewery, Tom Simms, decided to honor the legacy of science educator and sasquatch expert Thom Powell with a pale ale named  "Mr. Powell".  "Mr. Powell" is, after all, the way a generation of southwest Portland middle school students have come  to know local author and bigfoot researcher Thom Powell.

And you will be pleased to know two other details: First, owner Tom Simms has pledged to donate one dollar for every glass (!) of Mr. Powell ale sold, to the charity of Thom Powell's choice. Second, Thom Powell gives the beer two thumbs up.  It is a light, refreshing, and oh-so-drinkable summer ale, which is very similar to the highly-popular Mirror Pond Pale Ale that has been a flagship brand of Deschutes Brewing of Bend, Oregon.
Oh, and what happens to be the logo of Sasquatch Brewing? A view of Mt. Hood, of course. Could it be more perfect? Thank you Tom Simms and all the good folks at Sasquatch Brewing, for honoring Thom Powell's 3 decades of teaching and sasquatch advocacy.

As for the charity of choice, it didn't take very long: 'BARK' is a local Portland-based non-profit that serves as the official watchdog organization of the Mt. Hood National Forest and the sometimes screwy policies that are forced upon the good people who work there by a federal government that is not often including the resident population of mysterious beings (i.e. sasquatch or bigfoot) in their day-to-day management decisions. Click here for a link to BARK's homepage.  And do, to the good people at BARK, we hope the money is helpful, even if you don't spend it on a sasquatch viewing platform.
That said, we would also like to offer an olive-branch and a vote of confidence to all the good people and federal employees who work for the Mt. Hood National Forest. In many ways, you are equally deserving of the donation, but being an arm of the federal government, you aren't technically a non-profit. Indeed, we at Thomsquatch are very favorably disposed toward all the good people who work at 'the Hood'.  Heck, many friends and neighbors of Thom Powell were or still are employed by the Mt, Hood National Forest. Thom spent two summers doing wildlife research in the Mt Hood National Forest back in 2002-2003. Thom's daughter was an intern at the Mt. Hood National Forest before she was hired by Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
We're cheering for all you good people at 'The Hood'.  It is our hope that you can continue to operate with BARK, as you already are, as partners rather than adversaries.  BARK is an organization with a heart that is in the right place.  That heart lies with more preservation and less exploitation of the fantastic public resource that IS the Mt. Hood National Forest.
It is our feeling here at Thomsquatch that the future of 'The Hood', and the future economy of the surrounding communities, lies in tourism not timber extraction.  Some timber will always be taken from The Hood, but the burgeoning population and the enduring desire for recreational space by the nation's entire population, will ultimately supreceed the short-term gain of the corporate sector.  The ever-increasing demand for quality recreational experiences will dictate a permanent re-prioritizing of the mission of the Mt. Hood National Forest in the exact direction that BARK has embraced from their inception: recreation, appreciation, preservation, and limited commercial exploitation.
Remember, too, that ALL public lands, especially forest lands, suddenly have a new and urgent priority: they must serve the dual purpose of carbon sinks and greenhouse gas buffers. Trees, not saw logs, are the absolute key to worldwide carbon reduction and the preservation of our fragile, life-sustaining atmosphere.  Greenhouse gas reduction is a world priority, as well as a priority policy of the federal government as stated by President Obama. Toward that end, our million acre Mt. Hood National Forest is a jewel that is worthy of permanent, responsible stewardship with a particular emphasis on air and water purification.  That is something that all humans, sasquatches, environmental activists, career foresters, and beer-drinkers can agree upon.  So drink up ale-drinkers, and thank you Tom Simms for honoring the teaching career of  bigfoot researcher Thom Powell. It is an honor. After all, how many teachers have their own beer?

A 2012 Radio Interview with Thom Powell

A radio interview of bigfoot author and expert Thom Powell was conducted by radio host Bill Lee back in 2012. It happened so long ago it is all but forgotten. It recently surfaced on Shawn's BigfootEvidence blog and is republished here. The interview occurred just after the release of Thom Powell's second book, Shady Neighbors: a fictional story (novel) about a slightly clueless science teacher who has a family of sasquatches that are hanging around his rural homestead for some unknown reason.  As the story unfolds, the reason for the sasquatch presence becomes more evident to everyone except the clueless science teacher, who is always the last to catch on.  It might be obvious to the  readers who know the background on the author that the story contains many autobiographical elements pertaining to Thom Powell's life.  The book is therefore a bit of a humorous send-up of Thom himself.

Of the three books published by Thom Powell, Shady Neighbors,  continues to be a favorite.  This interview was conducted shortly after the release of Shady Neighbors.  If you listen, you will also notice that the ideas kicking around in Thom's head at the time will eventually materialize into his third book, an anthology of scientific and paranormal topics entitled Edges of Science. Click here to hear the interview.  Hope you enjoy listening to the interview.

Does the US Government/Military have a Sasquatch?   Probably.

Does the US Government/Military have a Sasquatch or two on ice or alive in captivity? Yes, according to the rumor mill. On May 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted, and the loss of life to both people and the wild animal population was considerable. There are claims that several Bigfoot bodies (some believed to be alive still, but injured) were whisked away to a secret military/government facility. You hear stories like this all the time regarding crashed UFOs and Alien bodies. So why not Bigfoot too when a disaster like this happens?

You be the judge!

In the late 90's early 2000's, a science teacher named Thom Powell picked up on a story by an anonymous government employee who alerted the Bigfoot Field Research Organization (BFRO) about a 7.5 feet long/tall burn victim with "multiple burns on hands, feet, legs and body; some 2nd and 3rd degree burns". According to the story, on August 6, 1999, Battle Mountain, Nevada, exploded into several simultaneous range fires in what would be known as the Battle Mountain Complex Fire. A Bigfoot was hurt in the fire according to an anonymous government employee. The story was later dismissed but the acclaimed author and science teacher believe it really happened and that the whole story was an elaborate cover-up.

It has been years since the story broke and still no one has come forward to claim it actually happened-- until now. Running a Bigfoot blog, we get some strange emails every once in a while. This morning, we received an email from someone who claims to be a former National Guardsman, saying he was there and he saw the Bigfoots. This person gives a detail account of the experience that he and four other guardsmen had with the creature and all were told to keep quiet about it.

Dear Shawn:

I was reading some of the stories about Mt. Saint Helen on the message boards and wanted to share this one. I only ask that you withhold my name.

I was a National Guardsman at the Mount Saint Helen site and this is the first time I have ever spoken about what I saw firsthand. I lived in Spokane, Washington and was 24 at the time this all took place.

I have read some of the other stories and they only tell part of the story.

I was placed on a special cleanup crew farther up the mountain. A large tent was set up and it was be guarded by armed soldiers who were not part of the guard. There were numerous soldiers on the scene that were not members of the guard.

We were given a briefing by soldier who said that “after he spoke to us, we would forget about him and what he said at the end of the mission”. This was strange as we never dealt with anything before.

Myself and four other guardsmen were told to follow a group of soldiers and not to speak to each other and to remain very quiet overall. We were told to get into a jeep and wait. We sat in the jeep for maybe a half hour. Eventually another jeep arrived carrying a civilian and another member of the military.

The civilian was brought into the tent and he emerged a few minutes later followed by a large hairy creature. It looked like a large man covered in fur and the best way to describe it was like “Beast” from X-Men only brown.

The creature looked to have some burns and had a bandage on its arm. At first we were afraid but when it walked by we could see its eyes and it just looked very sad and somber. He climbed into the back of a pickup with the civilian and the two were speaking in a weird language I had never heard. It would cough at times.

We followed the truck to different areas. There were 5 total stops. Each time we stopped we were told to follow the civilian and the creature. Each time we followed them to rocky areas where there were caves. The creature would make a sound and then listen. At the first area he made a sound and we all just waited in silence. After a few minutes, the creature looked at the civilian and then at the ground. The civilian at one point touched its shoulder and called for a canteen to give the creature a drink.

The same thing happened at the next area but this time there was a response to the sound. After a few minutes two soldiers emerged from the cave carrying a badly burned creature just like the one with the civilian. The creature bent down next to it and looked it over for about five minutes. It then spoke softly with the civilian. It turned and walked back to the truck and we were told to follow as we were walking away we heard a shot and we knew it was one of the soldiers putting the creature out of its misery.

There was no response at the third or fourth site but at the fifth there was another return sound to the creature. This time it was different and soldiers carried out a creature with a badly burned left leg. We were then ordered to all help get a very large stretcher from the truck and to help place the creature on it and carry it back to the truck.

We then immediately returned to the base camp. The creature was carried into the tent while the other creature and the civilian spoke. We were ordered to stay in the jeep until we were to be debriefed. As the creature turned to walk into the tent it looked at us and made a waving gesture with its hand. We took it as a thank you for what we had done.

By the time we were ordered out of the jeep we were all in shock. We were called over to an area to be debriefed and it was just strange. I will never forget what was said because it was just not what was expected. I thought I would hear “You took an oath and now you need to live up to it for your country with a threat also implied. A different high ranking soldier just said “look, do you all really want an explanation? You saw what we were doing. These creatures live in these areas; they mean no harm and want to be left alone. Do you really want to do anything that may cause them trouble? They are like us in a lot of ways. If you need or want to talk about this just wait about 30 years, by that time there will likely be no reason to keep them a secret”.

We were then ordered back to the guard camp because “they were breaking it up so nobody saw too much and knew everything that happened”. We did not speak of it and after a few months I just took the attitude that these things live out there and honestly my life is no different because of it. I only bring it up now because people have been writing a lot about MT. Saint Helen and I believe that the whole story should be told.

I will also say this. I like to camp and hike and have done so many times throughout the Northwest. Every time I would look for signs of these creatures, tracks, listen for sounds etc. I never saw or heard anything other than what I did that day on Mt. Saint Helen.
(Thanks to Shawn at the Bigfoot Evidence blog for providing me with the material for this post.)

Anonymous former National Guardsman claims that the Mount St Helens Bigfoot story really happened.

Yahoo News Says, "Bigfoot Exists!"

I Have Two  Question For Yahoo News:

"What Took Ya So Long?" and  "Did You Know That 'Yahoo' Means Bigfoot?"

You know those little news snippets they put on the homepage when you look for your e-mail?  One of the bigger e-mail servers, Yahoo, has just posted a first (for them): Twenty-one photos that "prove" bigfoot exists. Two question: What took you guys so long to get the memo? I mean, some of those photos are like fifty years old! Do they even know that "Yahoo" is a reference to bigfooted creatures in a Native American tribal language from the Wisconsin and Minnesota area?
Don't get me wrong.  I'm pleased to see them getting on board with the whole idea that bigfoot creatures exist. I hope they get a lot of hits on the link. The bad news is you have to put up with disgusting weight-loss ads on the sidebar, the maddening slide show formats that take forever to load, and loads of sneaky attempts to get you to click on advertisement links.  If you are willing to put up with all that just for the sake of leaning something you alread knew, here is the link to the 'slide show' that Yahoo News made by way of presenting photographic evidence of bigfoot.
Gimme a day or two and I'll paste all their photographic evidence on a blog post so you don't have to wade through all their advertising crap just to see the photos.   In the mean time, one might want to read a book or two on the subject. One could start with The Locals by Thom Powell just to get a foundation on the subject, then move on to Edges of Science  (also by yours truly)  if one really wanted some deep down understanding.  Oops I forgot. This is the internet.  Nobody reads books, anymore, do they?. Three short paragraphs is as much as anyone wants to read.
(Do I sound bitter? :-)

What is Bigfoot?

Dude, those things are BAD for ya!

A good friend and fellow blogger over at 'Bizzarre Bigfoot' posits the age-old "What is Bigfoot" question one more time. What is different about his examination of this question is that he cogently analyzes five options and then he eliminates four of them to leave the most radical view on the table. His five possibilities for answers to the "What is Bigfoot" question are:
1. It's not real. All sightings are mistakes or hoaxes.
2. Bigfoot is a missing link, like remnant Neandertals, Paranthropus, Homo Erectus, etc.
3. Bigfoots are nocturnal people, like remnant Indian populations.
4. Bigfoot are human hybrids engineered by extra-terrestrial entities.
5. Bigfoots are extraterrestrial (alien) entities that relocated here for a puropse.

Mr. Bizzaree Bigfoot, an accomplished journalist who likes to keep his real name out of the blog-o-sphere, does such an excellent job of breaking it all down that I will simply direct the reader to his Bizarre Bigfoot blog for the interest discussion and his fascinating conclusion.  I will offer that one big reason why I'm endorsing his discussion is that I make the same journalistic journey in in my latest book Edges of Science and I arrive at very similar conclusions. Do great minds think alike? You decide. Either way, Bizarre Bigfoot's essay is great stuff.  If you are curious about my book, you can click on the sidebar picture of the Edges of Science cover on this web page.
Oh, and if you happen to be in the neighborhood of Portland, Oregon on Friday, April 15th, you can mail your taxes at the downtown post office on NW Hoyt, the stroll on over to the Lucky Labrador brewpub on NW Quimby and see my good friend,TV star Cliff Barackman, present his take on "What is Bigfoot?" Click on this link for details of that event.  I'll be there, too, but Bob Gimlin won't be, because he is resting up for a late night spot on Coast to Coast AM the next night, beginning at 10 p.m. PST.  He will be interviewed by Coast to Coast AM 's most knowledgeable sasquatch scholar, Connie Willis.

By the way, You have until Monday to mail your taxes, due to some weird federal holiday on Friday that they honor in Washington, D.C. Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure it's true.

Pioneer Bigfoot/Sasquatch Researcher Mary Green Dies

A representation of the interactions reported by Mary Green in Monroe County, Tennessee.

Bigfoot researcher and writer, Mary Green, died this week. She was the first author to publish descriptions of sustained interaction between the hairless humans (us) and the 'forest people' or sasquatch.

To this day, the courageousness and originality of Mary Green's work is not even close to being recognized by the world at large.
Someday, it will be.

Her book is out of print.  If you have a copy, hang onto it! At the time it was published, she was vilified for having been hoodwinked by charlatans. Later, as more cases surfaced continent-wide, the credibility of her work was greatly elevated. To this day, however, there are still those who doubt the validity of the entire 'habituation' scenario. (Ah! Science!).  Still, I am proud to say I was communicating and collaborating with Mary Green even before she published.  I was one of the very first, along with Will Duncan and Dmitri Bayanov, to call her descriptions 'true fact.'

I learned of a habituation case near Mt. Rainier in Washington that bore striking similarities to the Tennessee situation Mary Green was describing. I published my descriptions only months later in The Locals, which included the first printed endorsement of Mary Green's work.  Of course, endorsing Mary Green's work in my own obscure title and getting a wider audience for it were two different things. It was an up-hill battle, to say the least.  Still is. Times are changing, but oh, so slowly.  Only last week, a four hour interview by a great radio host, Connie Willis, was aired on the famed late-night radio show, Coast to Coast AM.  The discussion ranged between verification, habituation, and even communication with the 'forest people' (bigfoots). Mary Green would have been proud. I hope she heard it. Click here for a link to that watershed Coast to Coast interview.

Here is an excerpt from her book,  Fifty Years with Bigfoot which neatly summarizes Mary Green's view:

"From the beginning of my research on reported living hominoids, it has been my desire to bring forth the truth about the bigfoot or sasquatch, which I became most certain dwelled here in our remote mountains and woodlands of Tennessee. My first thoughts about what the bigfoot were and what I have since discovered them to actually be has changed dramatically in the last two years. Perhaps by sharing Janice Carter Coy's observations on their behavior in their own habitat, a skeptical world can be awakened to the surety of their existence"

(50 Years with Bigfoot, by Mary Green 2002, p.3).

And here are some observation on Mary Green by Russian author/researcher Dmitri Bayanov, who is, in case you did not know, the world's greatest hominologist (bigfoot researcher):

"A skeptical world has not awakened yet. Why? Because hominology is a science not normal but revolutionary (in full accord with Thomas Kuhn's teaching)...As a result, still not a dollar is spent by world science on research into evidence of existence of living uncatalogued hominids on earth. Instead we hear this: "ExoMars 2016 mission underway. Breaking News. Massive spacecraft launched toward Mars. Its rover will search for evidence of martian life, past or present."

"Isn't the World Science Establishment a madhouse as long as the worldwide existence of "wildmen" is ignored?  My answer to the question why I believe what is said by Mary and Janice in their book was this:

"Because Janice, who tells the story, has confided to me such details of the bigfoots' anatomy and behavior which she had nowhere to learn from but in actual close observations of the creatures. We do know a number of cases in Russia and North America of close interactions between homins and humans, but, to my knowledge, it's the first time such interactions are described first hand so circumstantially. Paradoxically, this book written by two lay persons, turns, if I may say so, a new page and opens a new chapter in the science of man and man's origin."

"Like Mary's, my thoughts about sasquatches and homins in general have also changed dramatically after learning the story and evidence presented by Janice because there was no longer ground to doubt the veracity of Albert Ostman's story and some stories of close interactions in Russia.
Wishes of peace and good luck to all."   Dmitri Bayanov

Catch the Thom Powell Interview on 'Coast to Coast AM' this SUNDAY Night

Are you a fan of late night talk radio with a paranormal bent?  Then you surely have heard of Coast to Coast,  the grand-daddy of paranormal radio. It was founded by Art Bell, then, after many, many years, the reigns were taken by George Noory.  More recently, Connie Willis has been added to the elite staff of interviewers.
Connie Willis lives in the Midwest and  she is particularly intrigued by the bigfoot/sasquatch phenomenon.  Ms. Willis does not investigate the bigfoot/sasquatch phenomenon in a vacuum, though--rather she is interested in how bigfoot relates to other paranormal phenomena.  Connie Willis' inclination for taking on 'the big picture' positions her perfectly to interview Thom Powell, who has recently published Edges of Science, a compendium of paranormal research and scientific mysteries.
Whether you are a long-haul trucker, a weekend insomniac, or just a person with enough curiosity to keep you awake during the wee hours of Sunday night/Monday morning,  please join us on Coast to Coast AM this SUNDAY, March 13 or Monday morning, depending on your time zone.  The program begins at 1 a.m. EST, 12 a.m.Central, 11p.m. Mountain, and 10 p.m. Pacific.
The conversation will range widely between a variety of paranormal topics but, in light of Connie Willis' inclination, not to mention Thom Powell's, the emphasis will center on the topic of exactly how the sasquatch/bigfoot phenomenon relates to the bigger picture of paranormality and universal mysteries.

'Edges of Science' Takes Off !

Special thanks to Guy Edwards of for the fantastic cover art.

Suddenly, everybody is asking me about it.  I'm not sure what happened, but Edges of Science has hit its stride. Calls for interviews....requests for appearances...suddenly lots and lots of books being sold!  I am indeed grateful and humbled. I will do all I can to acknowledge and respond to the sudden increase in public interest in the book that has happened only in the past ten days.
I wrote what I believed to be the fact of the matter, no matter how controversial or 'edgy' it was, and for that reason, I  never really expected it to go anywhere. It may have been the truth as I saw it, but it was also edgy as hell, and I knew it all along.
Mind you, I did my absolute best to produce a worthy product. At 130,000 words, 350 pages, and numerous photos and illustrations, I sincerely tried to produce a product that would give the reader their money's worth of  original and thought-provoking literature.  But, when you write a book, you are operating in a total vacuum.  You have almost no feedback on how you are doing with the project nor any feedback at all on how the final product will be received.   That is probably the most difficult aspect of the writer's job: trusting your instincts.
I learned with the first book (The Locals, 2003) to just stick the book out there and 'don't blink' when the first reviews are absolutely scathing...and they were.
"Stay the course," as President Reagan used to say. It wasn't easy, but I did. I was called 'delusional' by people whose opinions I respected. Still, I went out there and paid my dues doing public appearances, blog posts, pod casts, and various attempts at publicity.  Mostly, it seemed like the world responded with deaf ears, although that isn't fair either. A few friends and followers of my work were kind enough to offer unsolicited feedback of the kindest and most supportive sort. Trust me when I say, it is impossible to overestimate the degree of encouragement that this provided.  I will always be grateful to my friends Molly Lebherz, Joe and Sharon Beelart, Guy Edwards, Alicia Bateman, Kathy Strain, Russ Taylor, Jack Powell, Randy Schimmel, and several others who got behind this project in its earliest stages.  It really kept me believing in the project to know it resonated with at least a few good people.
Then one day, something changed. I don't know what, but it seemed like, within the scope of a week or two, I was  seeing a huge surge in awareness of, and interest in, the project entitled, Edges of Science.
I'm not at all sure where it will go.  I'm still just a middle school science teacher in a little public school in southwest Portland.  I tried to write a book that would make people think and maybe even change the world for the better, at least a little bit.  That was my only goal. I hope I achieved it. It's still an open question.  I would welcome any and all feedback on that question. Please feel free to post your impressions of Edges of Science in the comments section below.  Thank you, everyone, for showing an interest.
(For info on purchasing a signed copy, click on the cover shot to the right of this blog post. If you are foreign or overseas, please order through The customs forms on a mailed book are a bear and overseas postal rates are prohibitively high.   A Kindle copy is also available thru Amazon for $5.99. Rest in Peace Edgar Mitchell, Paranormal Hero

Edgar Mitchell 1930-2016
This week marks the passing of a pioneer of the paranormal, astronaut Edgar Mitchell.  Unlike most astronauts who retreat into obscurity, Edgar Mitchell never stopped pushing the boundaries of science and human understanding during his later years.   In 1971, Mitchell became the sixth man to walk on the moon.  Six others followed him before the Apollo missions ended, making Mitchell one of twelve human to set foot on an extraterrestrial world.
By his own description, Mitchell had a profoundly life-changing experience on his way back from the moon. “What I experienced during that three-day trip home was nothing short of an overwhelming sense of universal connectedness. I actually felt what has been described as an ecstasy of unity,” he said.  Mitchell kept his head down for a while, but eventually he went public with the assertion that the United States government has a great deal of information on extraterrestrials that they were not sharing.  He was very vocal about the need for greater disclosure, but his interest in the paranormal did not stop with his pleas for greater government disclosure.

The Barackman Footage:

Did 'Finding Bigfoot' Succeed Without Realizing it?

Blobsquatch (top center) photo-bombs Cliff's scene
in last Sunday's Finding Bigfoot episode.

When you life is an X-files episode, the synchronicities just keep on happening. Here is yet another one:
On Sunday night, I had a cameo appearance in an episode of Animal Planet's 'Finding Bigfoot.'  On Monday morning, I sat down at my cluttered desk at Robert Gray Middle School and opened an e-mail from a person named Connie:
I can't believe I am doing this, but I didn't know who else to contact.
On Finding bigfoot, the episode you were in, there's a point in which I think they filmed bigfoot.
Its just after Bobo speaks to Renae and it goes into Cliff solo investigation. Cliff is walking through the meadow and to his right is a line of trees, if you follow a line straight up from Cliff toward the top of the screen you can see it. Its a dark bipedal figure beside a tree.
You know Cliff and I thought you might get a straight answer.  Until this episode I hadn't heard of your books, but I plan on reading them soon.
I happened to to be conversing with Cliff by way of a group-text-thingy that included Guy Edwards, Mike Leone, and Kirk Sigurdsen. I told Cliff about the message from Connie and he replied to the effect that he gets about one of those blobsquqatch-in-the-camera-field-of-view messages every week.  Still, Mike Leone offered to try and isolate the shape when he viewed the episode which he had saved on his DVR.
When he got home, Mike had absolutely no problem finding the blobsquatch using Connie's excellent directions. Mike was immediately impressed with Connie's sharp eye. He isolated the clip and sent us all a copy. Here it is:
(Pause  at the 4 second mark and go straight up from Cliff's head.)
                                           ****Apparently removed by the proprietor****

Now, anybody who has been at this bigfoot game for more than a week knows about 'blobsquatches'; those indistinct forms that people are always finding in outdoor videos.  Sasquatch enthusiasts have their own form of pareidolia in which they interpret every stump and shadow as a sasquatch in hiding. Still, after after viewing the clip that Mike Leone isolated, even the appropriately skeptical Cliff agreed that it was certainly a bipedal form that briefly manifests itself on camera. Oddly, it did not get spotted by video editors, and despite the many hours of other footage that could have been used, the blobsquatch shot made the final cut!   Cliff was not certain, but speculated that it may be a crew member who accidentally ended up in the shot, which was taken from a helicopter, by the way.
OK, I've seen enough episodes of 'Finding Bigfoot' that I know what has to be done here.
They have to launch an investigation of what I'm calling 'The Barackman Footage." Of course, it starts with a Town Hall Meeting.  In this case, the meeting will be attended by all the cast and crew members who were on the scene.  They are going to watch the clip and figure out which yobo accidentally put themself in the shot. I'd be willing to bet nobody admits to it.  Hell, I worked with the Finding Bigfoot crew.  They were very professional and very aware of their surroundings at all times.  Everybody knew their job and did it well.  Would one of the crew or cast have stumbled into the shot and the video-editors missed it when they edited the shots? Cliff thinks it's possible, so this will have to be thoroughly investigated.  They'll have to go back to the exact spot and take measurements of the tree that the bipedal form is standing against. They will have to find the master copy of the video and enlarge and analyze the image as much as possible. At least this once, they won't have to negotiate a price on the raw video.  They already own it.
I showed some students in my classroom the image and they speculated that the shape of the legs suggested a pair of baggy shorts. On the other hand, they puzzled over the broad frame of the torso and the lack of color and contrast in the putative clothing. The 'Finding Bigfoot' team needs to investigate this thoroughly.  After all, their reputation is riding on this.  If they can rule out humans, then Finding Bigfoot did what they set out to do at the shows inception: find bigfoot!  Oddly enough, if it is a bigfoot, it might be more accurately stated that 'bigfoot found them.'
The irony of that thought is certainly not lost on me, for one of the 'crazy Thom' statements I made on camera in that very episode was that, "I don't look for bigfoot. I let bigfoot find me."  Is it possible that such event actually occurred on the same episode in which I made that statement?  That seems too incredible to be true. Bear in mind though, that every time I'm involved in the show, weird things happen.  A couple years ago they filmed a bunch of shots in the woods at my house, then the tape containing all the shots they worked so hard to accumulate mysteriously disappeared! It was never found. They hade to reshoot the entire day's work. Bizzarre.
Do I think the blobsquatch in Cliif's scene is the real deal? Not really. But I still say it needs to be investigated further, becauseethat is what the show is about: verification.  One of the many ironies of this event is the idea that they now have to investigate some footage from their very own show.  Another irony is the thought that bigfoot may have found them and shown itself just as they were looking in another direction, exactly as I suggested on camera. Another key idea that many contemporary researchers embrace, is the idea that the sasquatch can be in your immediate, but you cannot see them. The camera, however, faithfully records their presence,  As my buddy Ron Lewis would say, "The camera doesn't have a mind to trick." It's a 'woo-woo' thought, I know, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
If the 'Barackman footage' does pass muster, that would be at least one 'Crazy Thom' idea that was not so crazy after all. Better yet, Cliff would have the Christmas card photo he alwasy wanted: he and a bigfoot in the same shot.
I'm not living under any illusions. it probably won't rise to the level of authenticity but let's investigate this video anomoly and see where it goes. If it does hold water, it won't be the first time someone got photo-bombed by a bigfoot. And of course, there's the ultimate irony: Bigfoot found (and photo-bombed) the high-profile team that set out to find the bigfoot!

(It was a blast being involved in the taping of an episode. Thanks to the producers, but especially Cliff, for getting me involved. It was a pleasure to work with such a professional outfit. Now that you may have found Bigfoot, what are you going to do next?)

My Life is an X-Files Episode

Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully

TV shows are supposed to enable us to escape reality.  Which is why I never liked the X-Files. Every episode of X-files I did watch bears so many similarities to my own life that it is really quite disturbing. I find myself  wondering whether Chris Carter, the show's creator, is somehow spying on my life.

In hopes of getting to the bottom of this weird coincidence, I needed to know where the writers of X-files,especially the show's creator Chris Carter, were getting their material.  I looked up 'Chris Carter' on the internet. I found out that Chris Carter and I were a year apart in age, and we had similar upbringings, and we shared many of the same interests, particularly our interest in investigating and writing about the paranormal and the supernatural.

Chris Carter
Christopher Lloyd
Granted, the similarities between my life and the X-files only goes so far.  My life has no gun battles and not much high drama, but really bizarre coincidences are always happening to me as I pursue paranormal entities, and even learn how to communicate with them.  At times those same paranormal entities, and maybe agents of 'the government' seem overly interested in my X-files-like life. Not to overstate the parallels. I have no smokin' hot sidekick like Gillian Anderson's character, Agent Dana Scully.  The best I can do in the 'investigative partner department' is an occasional alliance with some homely dude like Guy Edwards or Cliff Barackman. I don't carry a gun or a badge. No car chases. Only a couple arrests, but lots and lots of conversations with police and government agents.
Hugh Laurie
David Duchovny as Fox Mulder
What a team: He's no Gillian Anderson but I'm no David Duchovny
I don't look anything like David Duchovny. (More like the "House" character played by Hugh Laurie, or maybe Christopher Lloyd in 'Back to the Future'.)   Still, every time I tuned in to the X-files, the parallels were so legion that it bugged me.  I couldn't stand to watch it.  David Duchovny's character, Fox Mulder, even used some of the same pet phrases that I am given to use.  Fox Mulder once used the line, "Ever seen a UFO in these parts?"  I love walking into a country bar and breaking the ice with someone at the bar with the line, "Ever see a bigfoot in these parts?"  "The truth is out there," is one of Fox Mulder's pet phrases.  My favorite saying is "Truth is stranger than fiction."  Not exactly the same, I know, but still...
The Fox Mulder and Dana Scully characters did investigate the connection between the sasquatch and the ETs like I did.  It was not critcally acclaimed but they did do a bigfoot episode.  I have not seen it. Nor do I want to. My life is a bigfoot episode. Actually, my life is is more of a hybrid combination of Animal Planet's 'Finding Bigfoot' and  Fox's 'X-files'. I spent fifteen years investigating bigfoot reports off-and-on before the show Finding Bigfoot ever aired.  When it did appear, it was also so disturbingly similar to my life I couldn't stand to watch it.  Have spent so much time hanging out with Matt Moneymaker,  Cilff Barackman, and Bobo, I noticed they also used some of my sayings and phrases.  "I don't mind other guys going paranormal with their bigfoot research." Cliff is given to say.  "That means I don't have to." Another one: "I don't chase bigfoot, anymore.  I let bigfoot find me." It's weird when you hear your own words coming out of the TV's speakers.
Eventually, my pursuit of the bigfoot phenomenon widened to include the entire paranormal realm.  That's when my life really went 'X-files'.  I didn't let it bother me.  Indeed, I realize that, if paranormal stuff makes a popular TV show, I should start writing some memoirs, that is, the 'X-files' elements in my own life story.  So,  I got busy and wrote what eventually became my latest book, Edges of Science. Now, it is done and published, and each of the the eleven chapters is essentially a real life episode of X-files from my own life.

At one point I was writing a chapter about the paranormal mysteries inherent in the enigmatic Anasazi culture.  I took a break from my writing and turned on the TV. I flipped to an X-files rerun.  To my amazement, Agent Mulder was journeying to the Anasazi ruins of New Mexico in hopes of verifying his suspicion that the extraterrestrials were hiding out right here on earth.  I shut off the TV. "Oh great," I thought. "Now Chris Carter has hacked into my hard drive."
I guess I don't care, anymore.  I finally finished writing Edges of Science.  It reads like a full season of X-files episodes.  My view agrees perfectly with that of Agent Fox Mulder.  The ETs are dug in to enclaves that are scattered throughout the earth.  David Duchovny's character, Fox Mulder is right.  Gillian Anderson's character, Agent Scully, the sexy skeptic, is wrong. Sexy, but wrong.
I should send Chris Carter a copy of Edges of Science, but it seems like he already has one.  Most of my chapters mirror episodes of his iconic science fiction series.  There's only one difference, and it's a big difference: Chris Carter's X-file TV show is all fake.  It's great science fiction but it's still fiction.
Edges of Science, on the other hand, is fact. Every word of it actually happened to me. The pace is a little slower in real life. What Chris Carter portrays in an hour unfolds in my life in something like a year.  So, in about fifteen years I lived about a full season of X-files episodes. Which is why I cannot watch X-files and why I cannot watch 'Finding Bigfoot' very much, either. For me, it's all too real. I watch TV to escape my life, not to relive it.
Maybe I'll watch some 'House' reruns instead.

Thom Powell to Appear on 'Finding Bigfoot' TV Show This Sunday

Last June I participated in the taping of an Oregon-based episode of the long-running cable TV show, Finding Bigfoot. Cliff and I camped in a secret bigfoot hot-spot in the Clackamas River drainage and tried some bigfoot attraction strategies with cameras rolling.  You will have to watch the episode to find out how effective our attraction strategies were.
Originally, the episode was going to air at the end of last summer. Then, they started saying the show was going off the air,and the episode I contributed to would not have been aired at all. Then they got picked up for another season, so they resurrected the Oregon episode, but moved it to the new season.   Maybe their plan was to anchor the whole new season around my dazzling performance, or they held off airing my episode last season because that would actually improve their chances of getting picked up for another season.  I'm not sure which it was. We'll let the viewers decide.
In any event, if you want a good laugh, tune in to Animal Planet at 10 p.m. on Sunday, January 31to see how us Oregon bigfoot enthusiasts go about Finding Bigfoot. Here are some photos I shot on location during the taping:

CIA Lifts Truth Embargo; Posts UFO Files on Their Website!

It’s the moment UFO fans have been waiting for -  the CIA has hand-selected some formerly top-secret files and photos to ‘prove’ extraterrestrials exist.
Sadly for extraterrestrial fans, the files are a bit lacking in alien autopsies and crashed flying saucers - but they’re a fascinating insight into the height of the ‘flying saucer’ era.
The CIA released the files - seemingly to coincide with the new X-Files episodes - provoking disbelief on UFO websites.
Mind you, for the past half-century, the CIA has tenaciously maintained a position of 'plausible deniability'.  Have they really decided to "come clean" now, just because they don't want David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson to steal their thunder with the newly-released upgrade on the old X-Files TV show?  Don't take my word for it. I'm just a run-of-the-mill blogger on paranormal matters.
Rather, let's go to a definitive source.  Here is a link (click here) to the CIA's very own website, specifically a 'Library' page that details the newly released documents that are now available for public inspection.  Unless someone has elaborately hacked the CIA's website, it appears to be completely legit.

One report, entitled, "Flying Saucers" and dated 1 August 1952, says, ‘Less than 100 reasonably credible reports remain ‘unexplainable’ at this time. It is recommended that CIA surveillance be continued.'
‘It is strongly urged, however, that no reports of CIA interest or concern reach the press or public.
The CIA said, ‘We’ve decided to highlight a few documents both skeptics and believers will find interesting.'
Such documents often prove disappointing to hardcore UFO fans, according to one expert.
Nigel Watson, author of The UFO Investigations Manual, said last year, ‘At least 10,000 UFO reports collected by the US, Project Blue Book, have been put online and many other governments have released their UFO files.
Naturally, we can be quite confident that whatever material has been officially released is far from their "best stuff".  The most stunning revelations will, for the time being, remain locked away and out of sight. Still, I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth.  I would, instead, like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank my good friends in U.S. government and intelligence circles for making the courageous decision to even partially lift the long-held truth embargo.
Full disclosure: my gratitude, however sincere, is also a bit self-serving.  I recently published the book Edges of Science which, among other things, chronicles some remarkable UFO-related incidents.  The official acknowledgements of UFO activity are another big step in the direction of giving some long-sought credibility to the work that I, and many others, have been doing for quite some time (see below).  I said it before but I will say it again: Thank you, U.S. Government! Oh, and this to the web developers at CIA: Nice website!   Thanks also to YahooNews for contributing information to this blog post.

Note the bit of humor that was surreptitiously added to the
back cover: That's Thom Powell proudly wearing a CIA golf shirt
that was given to him by agency personnel during a recent visit to Ohio.
With the CIA's new degree of openness now being a matter of
record, I wear it more proudly than ever.

The Truth Embargo

Between 1947 and 1953 the U. S. Government became highly committed to keeping all information on ETs and UFOs concealed from the population at large.  For the ensuing sixty years this effort has been largely successful, although the shroud of secrecy has been gradually eroded by the persistence of many individuals over the years who have investigated and published books that seriously treated the idea that the government is keeping its information on the subject under wraps. This is what's known as 'the truth embargo'.  One long time advocate of this view is Laurance Rockefeller, who has championed an intiative for full disclosure called the Rockefeller Initiative.
Hillary Clinton and Laurence Rockefeller in 1995.  Clinton is holding a copy of Are We Alone: Philosophical Implications of the Discovery of Extraterrestrial Life by Paul Davies.

This initiative has gained greater attention as the message is given serious discussion by political figures like Hillary Clinton and  John Podesta, a former adviser of Barack Obama and chief of staff to President Bill Clinton. In a  recent article in an on-line publication called The Observer, Robin Seemangal reveals a statement made by democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton that, if elected, she would like to get to the bottom of the allegations of a long standing truth embargo on the ET subject within the U.S. Government. “Yes, I’m going to get to the bottom of it” said Clinton when questioned on the subject by reporter Daymond Steer.“I think we may have been visited already. We don’t know for sure.”  Click here to see the entire article by Robin Seemangal.
Personally, I have no access to secret government information but I have spent fifteen years independently investigating whatever evidence I could gather that spoke to the issue of whether extraterrestrials may or may not have some involvement in the affairs of humanity.  While my evidence cannot be described as incontrovertible, it does paint a compelling picture of an extraterrestrial presence here on Earth that dates back to the dawn of humanity. It's all there in my latest book, Edges of Science, published by Willamette City Press.  To summarize, my personal findings are completely consistent with the considered opinions of Laurence Rockefeller, Steven Greer, Stanton Friedman, and many others who have taken up the cause of 'full disclosure'.  And so, I will take this opportunity to offer praise and support for these courageous individuals.  I also applaud candidate Hillary Clinton for having the courage to broach this politically risky issue at a campaign appearance in New Hampshire.   Full disclosure: I'm a registered Democrat, so I already support Clinton the candidate, but her recent statements to the editorial board of New Hampshire's Conway Daily Sun are another big reason why I support Clinton's candidacy.
If my political affiliations have not alienated you, consider checking out my latest book, Edges of Science, which treats this and several other fascinating subjects that are loosely categorized as 'paranormal.'  No matter what your political tendency,  Edges of Science will probably alien-ate you!

State Trooper: I Feed Bigfoots and They Have a Language

A former state trooper from Washington said on Wednesday that he is currently in contact with several Bigfoot creatures and that he feeds them food regularly.
The man, who provided a full name but chose to remain anonymous, told Cryptozoology News that the encounters have been happening since 2009 in a remote area in the North Cascades.
“Sometimes it is just 5 to 10 minutes, other times they stay for hours,” he said. “I leave them food and they visit,” he continued.
From apples to carrots, to beef jerky, cookies and candy bars, the ex-law enforcement officer claims the creatures eat it all and leave him alone.
The man says he was looking for an old mine in the mountains the first time he came across the alleged beings in 2009.
After leaving the food out there for them, he says, they seem to have started following him and getting closer.
“I have been as close as 20 feet to some of them.”
He reports he was so close to them that he was able to catch some of their “language” in two different occasions.
“They sounded similar to Native American and Asian mix,” he explained, adding that he speaks “some Asian and Native American Salish” himself.
The creatures reportedly stand between 6 and 7 feet tall and probably weight around 500 pounds, females being a little lighter.
“They have a human-like face, some with dark hair, others red or brown, probably about 3 to 4 inches long. The females had small breasts,” the man, also a former Army Special Forces soldier, explained.
And he says he is not the only one to have seen the creatures in the area. Numerous people have also purportedly seen them while accompanying the man.
“When I am alone, they are close. When others are with me, they stay 75 to 100 feet away. Females come the closest to me. They like some people and some they do not?”
The former state trooper says the creatures have never presented a threat to him and that he leaves them alone and is not interested in hunting them or gathering physical evidence.
“I am not in the forest to seek them, I look for something else. However, they appear to be getting closer to me each time,” he said. “I do not try and take their
picture or bother them in anyway.”
As to what these beings really are, the man believes he has a theory.
“I think they may be a primitive human species that we know very little about. They appear to me very intelligent.”
Florida resident John Bird last year claimed to feed Bigfoot potatoes and plantains on a regular basis.
In the spring of 1982, a soldier training at Fort Leonard Wood Army Base in Missouri claimed to have spotted a 7-feet-tall creature with brown hair that resembles the former state trooper’s alleged sighting.
The North Cascades, also known as the Cascade Mountains, lay between British Columbia and Washington state. Portions on the United States side of the range are part of the North Cascades National Park.
Earlier this week, there were reports revealing the intentions of the U.S. Army to annex part of the region as a helicopter training area, drawing criticism from the Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics.
Update: Shortly after the publication of this article, another man claiming to be a law enforcement officer working in the “isolated areas of Washington state” contacted Cryptozoology News hoping to get in contact with the original eyewitness of this story. The man provided his full name and maintained to have had Bigfoot encounters that he says “wishes to keep” to himself. He did not elaborate on the purported encounters.
